MAC calls on Chinese authorities to respect Taiwanese reporters

Taipei, Aug. 13 (CNA) Mainland Affairs Council Deputy Minister Wu Mei-hung Thursday called on Chinese authorities to respect press freedom and to protect journalists, noting that the council learned about the brutal treatment of Taiwanese reporters by local policemen while covering the Wednesday night explosions in Tianjin. Taiwanese as well as international media representatives were surrounded by a group of policemen. A policeman then seized a Taiwanese reporter's camera and confiscated the memory card. According to the Taiwanese reporter, the policeman ordered him to get on his knees and beg, if he wished the memory card to be returned. In response to inquiries from the Taiwanese media, Ma Xiaoguang, spokesman of the Chinese State Council's Taiwan Affairs Office, said that it is likely the policeman who took away the memory card was under a great deal of pressure at the time, and he does not represent all policemen and Chinese authorities. He added that his office has contacted the Tianjin local government's Taiwan Affairs Office to handle the case. (By C.C. Ying and Lillian Lin)
