St. Lucia ambassador expected to assume duties in Taiwan next month

Taipei, Aug. 11 (CNA) St. Lucia has chosen its new ambassador to Taiwan, who is expected to arrive in the country to assume his duties by the end of September, a Taiwanese official responsible for Latin American and Caribbean affairs said Tuesday. The St. Lucia government is expected to give formal notification to the Republic of China embassy in the Caribbean country soon, said Lino Cheng (???), deputy director-general of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' Department of Latin American and Caribbean Affairs. His remarks came in response to questions on the issue of the St. Lucian ambassador at a news briefing. He declined to divulge the name of the ambassdor, but added that the ministry will make an annoucement later. "We hope that the ambassador will arrive in Taiwan to take up his post by the end of September," Cheng told reporters. St. Lucia held an opening ceremony of its embassy in Taiwan in June in a move to further promote bilateral ties. The embassy will begin operations after the new ambassador arrives in Taiwan, Cheng said, adding that all software and hardware equipment needed in the embassy is already in place. The ROC and St. Lucia have maintained close cooperation in public health, education, infrastructure and culture since the two countries resumed diplomatic relations in 2007 following a 10-year hiatus. The two sides first established diplomatic ties in 1984, but St. Lucia switched its recognition to the People's Republic of China in 1997. (By Elaine Hou)
