Taiwan to return to normal Sunday as Soudelor heads to China

Taipei, Aug. 8 (CNA) Life in Taiwan is expected to begin to return to normal Sunday after being battered by torrential rains and near record gusts by Typhoon Soudelor late Friday and all day Saturday. The Taiwan Railways Administration said all of its lines will operate as scheduled on Sunday except for the Alishan Forest Railway. The Suhua Highway, part of which is perched on cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean along Taiwan's eastern coast, is expected to re-open on Sunday at 5 p.m. after being closed Friday for precautionary purposes and experiencing several landslides triggered by the storm. Department stores around Taiwan are expected to operate normally on Sunday after some were closed on Saturday because of the threat of the typhoon. Schools and offices that were closed across the island Saturday will also be open for business except in Fuxing District in Taoyuan City, northern Taiwan. (By Wang Shu-fen and Lilian Wu)
