No progress on Taiwan-Indonesia development project: officials

Jakarta, Aug. 7 (CNA) Taiwanese and Indonesian authorities involved in a bilateral development project on Morotai, one of Indonesia's northernmost islands, said on Friday no significant progress has yet been made. Taiwan has not made any concrete development proposals, said Achmad Sigit Dwiwahjono, director general for international industrial security and access development under Indonesia's Industry Ministry. The two sides have yet to discuss infrastructure development -- including electricity installations and road construction -- in the Morotai special economic zone, a 2,400-square kilometer island located 2,600km from Taiwan with a population of about 50,000, he added. Chang Liang-jen (???), representative of the Taipei Economic and Trade Office in Indonesia, said no Taiwanese money has been invested in the project, approved last year by former Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. Hsu Lung-chuan (???), chairman of Jababeka Group, a developer, urged Taiwanese businesses to invest in the project. (By Chou Yung-cheih and Lee Hsin-Yin)
