Approach road to Zhongxiao Bridge to be demolished early next year

Taipei, Aug. 6 (CNA) An approach road to Zhongxiao Bridge will be demolished early next year, allowing the 130-year-old historic North Gate (??) to become an important landmark in western Taipei, Deputy Mayor Charles Lin (???) said on Wednesday. Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je (???) made the decision to remove the approach road and has ordered the Taipei Public Works Department to complete the project in eight days, by working 24 hour non-stop shifts, starting on Feb. 7, 2016, Lin said on his Facebook page. The decision is part of a traffic improvement project, which involves road adjustments and sidewalk widening, he added. Although the project is scheduled to take only eight days, preparatory work will start in December. The total traffic improvement project will be completed by November 2016. The project will allow the North Gate, which is located under the approach road, to become one of the main cultural landmarks near Taipei Train Station. Following concerns that the "North Gate" could be damaged during the implementation of the project, expressed by several civic groups, plans have been drafted to build a 20m wide, 10m high protective barrier next to the historical structure. Earlier this year Mayor Ko ordered the Public Works Department to remove a bus lane on Zhongxiao West Road in one day. Staff at the Public Works Department said that demolition of the approach road is just the first part of a plan to rebuild that area of western Taipei and will be followed by other public construction projects.
