Immigration officers nab 14 illegal Vietnamese workers in Taichung

Taipei, Aug. 6 (CNA) The National Immigration Agency's task force in Taichung, central Taiwan, rounded up 14 illegal migrant workers holed up in a ramshackle hut near the coast in the wee hours of Thursday morning. According to the task force, an informant gave the information about the whereabouts and daily routines of the 14 migrant workers from Vietnam whose paranoid behavior is said to have aroused suspicion. The undocumented migrant workers were cautious and would always have one of their group stand guard outside the hut at night. However, they were caught off guard Thursday when the task force raided the hut because the man on guard duty had dozed off. While the illegal migrants will be repatriated, the person who employed them, a subcontractor of the Taichung city government's water conservation project, will be fined between NT$150,000 and NT$750,000 for hiring undocumented workers. Local media reported that many illegal migrant workers come to Taiwan with valid documents, but illegally prolong their stays or escape from their legal employers to seek job opportunities with higher salaries.
