Land warning issued for Typhoon Soudelor

Taipei, Aug. 6 (CNA) The Central Weather Bureau issued a land warning for Typhoon Soudelor Thursday, warning against strong gusts and heavy rainfall as the storm is expected to pummel the island on Friday and Saturday. As of 8:30 p.m., Soudelor was centered 720 km east-southeast of Hualien, moving at a speed of 23 km per hour in a west-northwesterly direction, the bureau said. It is packing maximum sustained winds of 173 kph, with gusts reaching 209 kph, it said. Residents in Yilan, Hualien and Taitung counties in eastern Taiwan, as well as outlying Green Island and Orchid Island, should especially tighten their alert against the inclement weather, according to the bureau. The storm could make landfall somewhere between Hualien and Taitung in eastern Taiwan between late Friday and early Saturday, forecasters said. Hsinchu County and Hsinchu City in northern Taiwan, as well as counties and cities south of Yunlin have announced that schools and offices will operate as usual on Friday, while governments in the greater Taipei area (Taipei, New Taipei and Keelung) said they will decide whether to close schools and offices at 10 p.m. (By Lee Hsin-Yin)
