Dutch league opener scrapped due to planned police strike

THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) -- The opening match of the new Dutch Eredivisie league season has been postponed along with at least one other first-round fixture because of a planned strike by police.

SC Heerenveen announced Tuesday that its match against newly promoted De Graafschap Doetinchem, scheduled for Friday evening, has been banned by Heerenveen Mayor Tjeerd van der Zwan because of the strike.

Also scrapped was the Saturday night match between PEC Zwolle and SC Cambuur. ADO Den Haag and Willem II Tilburg said their season openers against PSV Eindhoven and Vitesse Arnhem respectively would not kick off this weekend if the police strike goes ahead.

Earlier in the summer, police who have been campaigning for months for better working conditions threatened to disrupt the Tour de France, which started in Utrecht, but did not interrupt the race.
