Asustek remains Taiwan's top vendor of notebooks, desktops in June

Taipei, Aug. 3 (CNA) Asustek Computer Inc. said Monday that it accounted for more than half of Taiwan's notebook and desktop computer sales in June, reinforcing its leading position in the domestic market amid a sluggish PC industry.
Citing the latest statistics from a market research firm, Asustek said in a news statement that its local notebook market share reached 50.9 percent in June, compared with a 33.1 percent share held by the second-placed manufacturer.
Asustek said it also accounted for 53.3 percent of Taiwan's desktop computer sales in June, much higher than the second-placed vendor, which had a 34 percent share.
The company, which showcased new PCs at the Taipei Computer Applications Show that concluded Monday, did not name any of its competitors in its statement.
According to German market research and advisory firm GfK Group, Taiwan's laptop sales volume in the first four months of 2015 increased by 3 percent year-on-year, while desktop computer sales declined sharply by 25 percent.
On July 8, Asustek surprisingly trimmed its 2015 global notebook shipments by 12.3 percent to 20 million units, citing stagnant business prospects for the PC industry.
The company shipped 5.4 million PCs -- including 4.8 million notebooks and 600,000 desktops -- in the January-March quarter globally, missing its expectation of 5.6 million units.
Asustek shares gained 0.35 percent Monday on the Taiwan Stock Exchange and the PC maker is scheduled to report its second-quarter earnings and provide third-quarter forecasts to investors Aug. 11. (By Jeffrey Wu)
