Rock festival held for Changhua youth during summer break

Taipei, Aug. 3 (CNA) In an effort to keep local youth away from drugs, alcohol and other hazardous or illegal activities during the summer vacation, the Changhua county government hosted a "Blue Windmills" rock festival Aug. 2, which drew over 300 participants.
Changhua Magistrate Wei Ming-ku presided over the opening of the festival and expressed hope that it would serve as a platform upon which young students can display their vigor, passion and enthusiasm.
It formed part of the county's special program to help students lead healthy lives over the current summer break and afterwards, Wei said during the opening, which was also attended by local community representatives and county officials. More than 300 teenagers from 27 music clubs at senior high schools across the county competed on the same stage for cash prizes of NT$10,000 (US$316) for the top winner, NT$7,000 and NT$5,000 for those who came second and third, respectively.
Several merit awards winners also won NT$3,000 each for their performances.
The Changhua county government is also scheduled to hold a carnival parade on its square in the morning of Aug. 15.
In the evening of Aug. 21, it will sponsor a "Blue Windmills" concert to raise public awareness about domestic abuse of children and teenagers, sexual harassment and sexual offenses. Personal safety and Internet security will also be highlighted in the concert as part of the county's efforts to build Changhua into a "place full of hope." (By Flor Wang)
