Car rams side gate of patriot missile base, probe under way

Taipei, Aug. 3 (CNA) The Ministry of National Defense confirmed Monday that a man used a van to ram a side gate of a Patriot missile base in Wanli District, New Taipei the previous day and fled after a soldier who was on guard duty tried to stop him.
Military police have launched an investigation into the incident after securing CCTV footage of the offense and the guard's testimony, Defense Ministry spokesman Lou Shou-he said in response to reporters' questions on the matter.
A local newspaper reported the incident earlier that day, and said the military had apparently tried to keep it secret.
Addressing the case, Lou said the man, identified only by his surname Kao, dented the side gate before he was instructed to stop the vehicle the previous afternoon. The man drove away at once and disappeared when the military called local police for assistance in the pursuit of the offender, he said.
Because the base failed to report the case formally at the local police station after failing to apprehend the man, it raised speculation that the military did not want the incident to be made public.
On Monday, the Air Defense Missile Command explained that the military base reported the case to the nearby military police division in Keelung because the military officer in charge at the time had to stay on the base to carry out combat preparations. As a result, he was unable to leave the base to visit the local police station to report the case in person as required.
The military police have launched an investigation into the offense, the command said.
Lou said the Defense Ministry will review the case to see if the missile command failed to handle the case properly, and will demand improvements if necessary. (By Lu Hsin-hui and Elizabeth Hsu)
