EPA warns of dangerous UV levels

Taipei, Aug. 3 (CNA) The Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) warned Monday of dangerously high ultraviolet (UV) levels all over Taiwan, with extremely high UV levels expected for Hualien and Taitung in the eastern part of the island.
Most areas in Taiwan were forecast to see either "very high" or "extremely high" UV levels, with the UV index in Hualien and Taitung hitting as high as 12.
The UV index is expected to hit a high of 10 in northern Taiwan and Yilan County and a high of 11 in the rest of the western part of the island.
A UV index of 8 and above is considered high, which means the average person could suffer sunburn after 20 minutes of exposure without proper protection, while a level of 11 or over is categorized as dangerous, as sunburn could occur in 15 minutes on average.
The EPA advised people to take proper precautions such as using sunblock when going outdoors to prevent sunburn and heat strokes. (By Zoe Wei and Y.F. Low)
