Central African Republic: UN peacekeeper killed in capital

BANGUI, Central African Republic (AP) -- A United Nations spokesman says one peacekeeper was killed and eight were injured after they came under attack by unidentified armed men in the capital.

Hamadoun Toure said the attack early Sunday morning in Bangui's PK5 district occurred as the peacekeepers were attempting to carry out an arrest warrant issued by the public prosecutor.

He declined to disclose the target of the warrant or the nationality of the peacekeepers.

Toure said the peacekeepers were attacked "by a group of individuals who were using heavy machine guns and grenades."

Central African Republic has been rocked by violence since the mostly Muslim Seleka rebel coalition toppled the president in 2013.

A transitional government was put into place in January 2014. Presidential and legislative elections are slated for Oct. 18.
