Students complete 1,000-km run around Taiwan in 27 days

Taipei, Aug. 2 (CNA) For some Taiwanese students, swimming at the beach or hiking in the mountains is a good way to spend their summer vacation, but for four students from Far East University, their idea of summer fun is taking a run around the entire country.
Kao Po-han, Huang Yu-chen, Huang Shang-feng and Hsieh Chun-yu, who are all members of the university's track and field team, embarked on their ambitious 1,000 kilometer run around Taiwan on July 1.
They set off from their university in southern Taiwan's Tainan and ran counter-clockwise around the country before returning to their starting point in the south. Due to head injuries caused by a scooter accident, Hsieh had to drop out on the second day, but the rest of the team completed their run on July 27.
Kao, who ran around Taiwan in 25 days by himself last year, said this year he felt more relaxed during the run because he had someone to chat with.
Many strangers cheered them on and bought drinks and food for them along the way, said Kao, who invited the three other students to join him for the run this year.
"Having a dream is the most beautiful thing," the leisure and sports management major said, calling the challenge a memorable life experience.
Huang Shang-feng, meanwhile, said it was a difficult challenge and at one point they were soaked by the pouring rain while running during a typhoon.
But he remembered a touching moment when a hotel owner in Chiayi approached them and offered them meals and a place to stay overnight. They later learned that the woman's son is a marathon runner, Huang said.
Kao said each member spent an average of only NT$7,000 (US$220) for accommodations and NT$3,000 for meals over the 27 days. (By Yang Ssu-jui and Christie Chen)
