Taipei is known for its various cuisines. Many people call the city a foodie’s haven. Recently, we had the pleasure to discover three lovely cafes for animal lovers, antique enthusiastists or people who seek space for themselves in this city. Mr. Cat’s Friend The decoration of the entrance area caught our eyes immediately. It is well decorated, with a touch of countryside style. The moment you open the café’s door, you would feel as if you have walked into the kitchen of your favorite aunt who lives in the countryside. The shop is not big; it is just the right size. The décor is heartwarming and you can also find four fuzzy friends at your sides. The manager of the café told us that all the cats are adopted by the owner. Pet owners are responsible for the life of their pets. The cat who is always on the chair is Yang, she is the oldest cat adopted by the owner. The second cat, who usually stands in front of the door to greet the customers, is Shan. The third cat is a black cat, named Black Mei. She is very friendly but more territorial; therefore, there are incidences where she urinated in the customers’ purse. The fourth cat is Didi, she loves food, and hence she is always in the kitchen. The manager said most customers are kind and tolerant, thus they are more understandable when the cats misbehave sometimes. However, the manger also said to keep an eye on the pets if they are stressed, yes, animals can be stressed as well. The manager said that it was unexpected that the café became popular because of the cats. However, through the interactions with the cats, they have drawn the customers closer to the staff of the café. Toast Chat Toast Chat is the second branch opened by the same owner of Mr. Cat’s Friend. The style of this café is completely different from the first one. It focuses on a modern industrial décor. The manager told us that the owner favors this style! Many customers enjoy the company of the cats and the tasty brunch. There are 5 cats in the café. Each of them has their own characters and favorite spot in the café. Many customers come for the cats and even make friends with the furry felines. Some customers even buy cat food cans for their favorite cat! And of course, all the cats in the café are adopted or given by the friends of the owner. As for the afternoon tea delights, the manager recommends popular dishes such as onion rings, fried chicken, German sausage toast set and French toast for dessert. It is a lovely experience to enjoy the tasty dishes while the furry friends rub against your bags. The café wishes the customers can relax and enjoy the company of animals thus there is no time limit for dining. Toast Chat also welcomes pet owners to bring their own pets to the café! Surprisingly, the felines prefer dogs than other cats. The manager told us that they are more nervous when new cats came to visit the café. Toast Chat is definitely a lovely place to spend your afternoon with the felines while enjoying your afternoon tea! Waking Up Café Apartment A unique café on a busy street but it is quite hard to find. The café does not own a signboard, and it is at the second floor of a building. Yet the moment you open the door, you will realize you have stumbled upon something quite personal and thoughtful. You can feel the thoughts and sentiment which the owner has put into this space. The café is quite spacious and luminous, which contains many different old furniture and items. When you look at the old poster, TV, computer and black disc, for a second, the time transcends to the days of yore. All the antiques and decoration come from the owner’s personal collection, presenting a mix and match style. All the items in the café come from years of collection. The owner said he started when he was a little boy. His father would take him to flea markets and they would find pieces to their liking there. The décor of the café echoes with the café’s name. Most people don’t have the leisure to sleep to their hearts’ content. The owner wants to send a message of living in the presence. Nowadays, people are busy to stop and live their lives. They don’t have time to notice the scenery that comes along their ways. He wishes his customers can find a time for themselves in his café. At first, the location gives the owner a hard time attracting customers. However, during the first month of operation, a food blogger came to his café and fell in love with the ambience and style of the café. His article increased the publicity of the café. Despite the customers’ love for the owner’s cat, Nini, he does not like people putting his café in the cat theme category. Nini is at the café because the owner does not want to leave her alone at home. Unexpectedly, she becomes quite popular among the customers. However, as Nini’s health declines in old age, she can only “work” once a week. In the future, the owner will continue to present more creative dishes and provide a quiet corner for everyone in the city. Waking Up Café Apartment is no doubt a hidden gem, waiting to be discovered.
