Student protester facing prosecution commits suicide

Taipei, July 30 (CNA) One of the student facing prosecution for breaking into the Ministry of Education building a week ago took his own life Thursday, officials said.
On his 20th birthday, Lin Kuan-hua was found dead by emergency workers summoned by his mother, according to the New Taipei Fire Department. He apparently locked himself up in a room and took his own life by burning charcoal.
A student at Juang Jing Vocational High School in New Taipei, Lin took time off from school in June to spend more time in the movement against controversial revisions in the guideline of high school history curriculum. He was released on a NT$20,000 bail after being detained for around 20 hours for storming the MOE building late on July 23.
He was one of 33 people arrested in the early hours of July 24 and faced possible prosecution along with 23 other intruders.
Lin was said to have been feeling depressed. His mother and sister had been sufficiently concerned that they took turns staying up with him until 4 a.m. Thursday in their home in Banciao, New Taipei, according to a report on the Apple Daily website. (By Wang Hung-kuo and Jay Chen)
