New Taipei ex-vice mayor faces scandal

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Former New Taipei City Vice Mayor Hsu Chih-chien was being investigated in a corruption case related to urban renovation, reports said Wednesday.
Hsu reportedly used his function as chairman of an urban renovation review committee to demand bribes from construction companies, the Chinese-language Apple Daily reported on its website.
On Wednesday, investigators reportedly searched 17 locations, including Hsu’s home and the headquarters of a major construction company, and questioned seven suspects and six witnesses, a list which included Hsu, a son, a brother, and company officials. The people questioned were likely to be transferred to the Taipei District Prosecutors Office for further interrogation, the newspaper reported.
From May 2011 until June 2014, Hsu reportedly accepted expensive watches and gold bars worth a total of millions of NT dollars from two construction companies named as Paohsing Development and Leyoung Construction Co., Ltd., reports said.
Hsu, 63, served as vice minister of finance but he studied urban planning in Taiwan and Germany, reports said. His government career lasted 34 years and included stints at Taipei City’s urban development department. New Taipei City Mayor Eric Liluan Chu recruited him to serve as one of his vice mayors and to chair the review committee, but he retired for health reasons in June last year.
Last year, Hsu said he was not involved in several construction scandals which broke out at the time, including those involving former Taoyuan County Vice Magistrate Yeh Shih-wen, the Farglory Group and Radium Life Tech Co., Ltd.
