Formosa Plastics to step up procurement inspections

Taipei, July 27 (CNA) Formosa Plastics Group (FPG,), one of Taiwan's leading petrochemical conglomerates, said Monday that it will step up inspections of its procurement processes in response to a bribery scandal involving dozens of its employees.
In a statement, FPG confirmed that 25 of its employees have allegedly taken bribes from a company that exclusively supplies PVC bags to FPG. The bag supplier bribed the employees to get orders from FPG, the group said.
Lin Chen-jung, general manager of Formosa Plastics Corp. was among those said to have been involved in the case, and he resigned July 24, FPG said.
FPG said it will handle the case "appropriately," according to the relevant laws and regulations, but did not mention in the statement whether it would press charges against any of the employees.
To prevent such cases in the future, the group said it will set up a task force to examine exclusive and emergency purchases, or purchases with designated specifications.
It will also step up inspections of its procurement measures and pursue legal action against unscrupulous manufacturers, FPG said.
The Taipei District Prosecutors' Office began an investigation into the case Monday for possible violations of the law. (By Wei Chu and Christie Chen)
