Honduran president to host investment seminar in Taiwan

Taipei, July 23 (CNA) Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez will preside over a seminar in Taipei Friday during a visit to Taiwan, in an effort to seek more foreign investment in his country and promote bilateral trade relations. Hernandez, who is heading a delegation of government officials, is scheduled to arrive in Taiwan late Thursday on the last leg of an Asian trip that has also taken him to South Korea and Japan to attract foreign investment, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This will be Hernandez's first trip to Taiwan since he took office in January 2014. The investment seminar will introduce investment and commercial opportunities in the Central American country to Taiwan's business community, said Jerry Yang (???), deputy director-general of the ministry's Department of International Cooperation and Economic Affairs, at a news briefing Thursday. The ministry has invited representatives from Taiwanese companies interested in importing coffee and cigars, as well as companies in areas such as mining, medical equipment, solar energy and wind power, Yang said. The main industries in Honduras include coffee, food processing and apparel manufacturing, he said. Honduras is also a member of a free trade agreement between Central America and the United States, which allows it to export 1,600 products to the markets of Central America and the U.S. tax-free, Yang said of the advantages of investing in Honduras. Bilateral trade between Taiwan and Honduras reached US$118.75 million in 2014, US$74 million of which consisted of Taiwanese exports to the Central American ally, Yang said, citing official statistics. "There's great potential for bilateral trade to grow," he said. Before wrapping up his visit Saturday, Hernandez is also set to meet with President Ma Ying-jeou (???) at the Presidential Office and to be welcomed with a 21-gun salute at the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, the ministry said. Honduras is one of Taiwan's 22 diplomatic allies, half of which are in Central America and the Caribbean. The two countries have maintained official ties for 74 years and conduct close cooperation in trade, medicine, infrastructure development, humanitarian assistance and other areas, according to the ministry.
