June jobless rate hits 3.71 percent (update)

Taipei, July 22 (CNA) Taiwan's unemployment rate in June hit 3.71 percent, up by 0.09 percentage points from May but down 0.21 percentage points from a year earlier, the Directorate General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics (DGBAS) reported Wednesday.
After seasonal adjustments, the June jobless rate stood at 3.76 percent, up 0.01 percentage points from a month earlier, statistics compiled by the DGBAS showed.
The month-on-month increase in the local unemployment rate for June reflected a rise in first-time job seekers during the current graduation season, but the figure was the lowest recorded for the month in 15 years since June 2000, when the jobless rate was 2.89 percent, the data indicated.
In June, the number of the unemployed in Taiwan stood at 431,000, up 11,000 from a month earlier, the DGBAS said.
The number of first-time job seekers rose 11,000 month-on-month and the number of those who resigned and sought new jobs and the number of those who lost jobs due to temporary work contract termination increased by 2,000 and 1,000 since May, respectively, the DGBAS said.
However, the number of those who were out of work due to business closures or downsizing fell 1,000 from a month earlier, the government agency said.
The number of the employed in June rose 6,000 from a month earlier to 11.19 million with the labor participation rate up 0.05 percentage points to 58.57 percent, it said.
Hou Mei-ling, a specialist with the census division of the DGBAS, said that despite the rise in the June jobless rate, the local job market remained stable since the increase was largely a consequence of the current graduation season.
Hou said that the impact from an increase in first-time job seekers is expected to continue to be seen over the next two months.
The DGBAS said that the jobless rate for the 20-24 age bracket stood at 12.17 percent, up 0.56 percentage points from May, pointing to the rise in the number of first-time job seekers, while the June unemployment rate for the 25-29 age group rose 0.15 percentage points from a month earlier to 6.58 percent.
The agency said that the jobless rate for people holding university degrees or higher rose 0.19 percentage points month-on-month to 4.66 percent in June, which also served as evidence of an increase in first-time job seekers.
In the first six months of this year, the average local jobless rate stood at 3.68 percent, down 0.29 percentage points from a year earlier, while the average local labor participation rate for the six month period reached 58.55 percent, up 0.11 percentage points, the DGBAS said.
