Passengers at Taoyuan Airport likely to hit 40 million in 2015

Taipei, July 22 (CNA) With surging numbers of passengers streaming through the gates of Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport, Taoyuan Airport Corporation (TAC) forecast Tuesday that the number of passengers will reach 40 million this year.
TAC announced that the number of arrivals and departures through the airport -- Taiwan's main gateway, in the first half this year was 18.75 million, or 7.02 percent more than the same period last year.
The company attributed the growth to the booming travel business in Northeast Asia this year and the addition of new routes by various carriers, including Indonesia AirAsia's Bali-Taipei flight, Korean Jeju Air's Busan-Taipei flight, Turkish Airlines' Istanbul-Taipei flight, and TigerAir Philippines' Boracay-Taipei route.
In addition, compared with average growth rate in the first five months of 7.58 percent, the number in June was the lowest this year at 4.35 percent, which might result from the MERS outbreak in South Korea, leading to a reduction in passengers between South Korea and Taiwan.
