President Ma, former U.S. VP Quayle discuss cross-strait relations

Taipei, July 21 (CNA) Visiting former U.S. vice president Dan Quayle (1989-1993) Tuesday suggested President Ma Ying-jeou to"keep doing the good job"of maintaining peace and stability between two sides of the Taiwan Strait.
Quayle discussed cross-strait relations with President Ma at the Presidential Office.
A Presidential Office spokesman relayed Quayle's statement that under President Ma, good foundations for Taiwan-U.S. relations and cross-strait relations have been established, and his successor, whoever that may be, can carry on the efforts with this basis.
President Ma used the opportunity to elaborate on his cross-strait policy and to express his concerns about the uncertainty of the continued development of cross-strait relations after the 2016 presidential election.
He suggested that there are people who wish to achieve peace and stability, but their approaches may fail to provide the desired outcome."This is what makes us feel uncertain,"the President said.
In response to President Ma's request for advice on how to achieve peace and stability on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, Quayle said,"keep doing the good job." (By Claudia Liu and Lillian Lin)
