Taiwanese students win 1st prize in 2015 IEEE future energy challenge

Taipei, July 21 (CNA) A team of nine students from National Taiwan University of Science and Technology won first prize and a cash award of US$10,000 at the IEEE 2015 International Future Energy Challenge (IFEC), the university announced Tuesday.
The team made it to the IFEC's final competition for Topic A: "High-efficiency Wireless Charging Systems for Electric Vehicles and Other Applications," held at the University of Michigan-Dearborn in the United States July 13-15. Also in the finals were teams from China, the U.S., Japan, South Korea and Germany.
The contestants were required to present a constant-current charger with a charging efficiency of over 90 percent, according to Chen Ming-cheng, a member of the Taiwanese team.
To meet the criteria was very difficult, Chen said, noting that the chargers made by several teams in the finals were not even able to transmit electricity.
The reason his team won was that the device it developed and fabricated is not just able to charge stably, but also has the features of constant current and constant voltage that together ensure the charging process is safe and reduces the depreciation rate, Chen said.
There is also a chance that their wireless charging system will be granted a patent and go into mass-production, since all similar systems are still in the trial phase in Taiwan, Chen added.
The IFEC is an international student competition for innovation, conservation and effective use of electrical energy, which is open to college and university student teams from recognized engineering programs in any location.
The competition is sponsored by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the Power Electronics Society, the Power & Energy Society, the Industry Application Society, the Industrial Electronics Society, the Vehicular Technology Society and the Power Sources Manufacturers Association.
