Milk Shop’s green tea and ice cubes found to be highly unhygienic

Health authorities in Tainan announced Monday that the green tea drinks sold by beverage chain Milk Shop have failed to pass food safety regulations, reports said.

Authorities have since began a citywide inspection on beverage chains dotted across the southern Taiwanese city. During the initial phase of tests, 64 types of beverages and ice cubes have been inspected for levels of E. coli and Coliform bacteria, whose symptoms include diarrhea, stomach cramps, and vomiting.

It was discovered that the green tea drinks and ice cubes used by Milk Shop stores in Northern and Yanshui districts of Tainan still contain abnormal levels of bacteria despite initial requests by the city’s health authorities urging for improvement.

Under Article 17 of the Food Sanitation Management Act, violators can be fined between NT$30,000 and NT$3 million.

Meanwhile, health authorities in New Taipei City concluded in their report that 50 of the city’s inspected beverage chains have managed to pass a reexamination on food safety after initial requests for sanitary improvements.
