President Ma meets Taiwanese expatriates in Los Angeles

Los Angeles, July 16 (CNA) President Ma Ying-jeou said at a dinner hosted by Taiwanese expatriates in Los Angeles on Thursday that he was satisfied to see during a trip to three allies in Central American and the Caribbean that his diplomatic approach was achieving results. Ma said the approach -- featuring an unofficial diplomatic truce with China and more focused aid projects -- had achieved better than expected results in the three countries he visited.
Describing Nicaragua, Haiti and the Dominican Republic as friends who honor morality and justice, the president said Taiwan will support their projects beneficial to the people, such as a center for handicapped children in the Dominican Republic and the Supreme Court building in Haiti. Ma also used the opportunity to clarify a report regarding his meeting with Nicaragua President Daniel Ortega, who was said by Taiwanese media to have asked Taiwan to build a planned port at Monkey Point on the country's east coast. The president said that in fact Nicaragua only hoped that Taiwan could help with the planning of the port rather than with its construction. At the dinner, Ma also thanked the United States for the convenience it had provided during his transits in the country.
The president is scheduled to return to Taipei on Saturday. (By H.C. Wu and Lillian Lin)
