US linguist dedicates himself to Taiwanese Mandarin research

American linguist Brian Brubaker categorized Mandarin into three categories after 10 years’ research. He indicated there are three categories of Mandarin: Mandarin, the Taiwanese version of Mandarin, and Taiwanese Mandarin.

Brian holds a Ph.D. degree in linguistics from the University of Pittsburgh. He started to notice the issues of Taiwanese politics, Hokkien, Hakka, and aboriginal Taiwanese people’s ethnic problems since 2000. He indicated that the languages in Taiwan were mostly influenced by the political situation, history, and education systems, and you can find out each stage of Taiwanese history from the development of Taiwanese Mandarin. Also, the retroflex consonant found in Taiwanese version Mandarin also shows the evidence of the mix of every ethnic groups.

Brian said, it is interesting that most Taiwanese only notice the Taiwanese Mandarin, but rarely discover about the Taiwanese version of Mandarin. As a linguist, he said that he will keep focusing on the development of language in Taiwan.
