Injured Indonesian fishing worker airlifted from Taichung waters

Taipei, July 16 (CNA) An Indonesian fishing worker suffered a deep laceration on his right arm Thursday while operating in waters off Taichung, requiring the National Airborne Service Corps (NASC) to deploy a helicopter to airlift him to a hospital. The fishing boat captain sought the NASC's support for rescue and transport shortly after blood began to pump out profusely from a blood vessel in the muscle of the fishing worker's arm after he was injured, which could cause him go into hemorrhagic shock, a condition of reduced tissue perfusion, resulting in the inadequate delivery of oxygen and nutrients that are necessary for cellular function, according to a NASC rescue worker. After getting the call for help, the NASC immediately sent a helicopter to airlift the 38-year-old Indonesian to Tungs' Taichung Metroharbor Hospital for medical treatment, the rescue worker said. A surgeon at the hospital then performed surgery lasting about one hour on him and arranged his stay at the hospital for several days for further medical treatment to reduce the likelihood of wound infections, according to a hospital spokesman.
