TransAsia to cancel flights due to typhoon

Taipei, July 16 (CNA) TransAsia Airways said Thursday that it will cancel two of its flights between Taiwan and Japan Friday as Typhoon Nangka approaches Japan. Flights GE602/601 between Taoyuan and Osaka are the flights to be affected, it said. The announcement came a day after China Airlines said that its flight CI113 to Hiroshima on Friday was being canceled due to the storm, which was taking direct aim at Japan as of Thursday. According to the Central Weather Bureau, as of 8 a.m. Thursday, Nangka was centered 430 km south of Osaka, moving at a speed of 21 kph in a north-northwesterly direction. It was packing maximum sustained winds of 137 kph, with gusts reaching 173 kph, the bureau said. On Nangka's current path, it could make landfall on the Japanese island of Shikoku overnight Thursday before reaching the country's main island of Honshu. (By Lee Hsin-Yin)
