TSMC cuts 2015 global semiconductor growth forecast to 3%

Taipei, July 16 (CNA) Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC, ???), the world's largest contract chip maker, cut its forecast for the 2015 global semiconductor growth Thursday to 3 percent from a previous estimate of 4 percent set in mid-April. The manufacturer of chips for Apple Inc. also trimmed its forecast for global foundry growth from 10 percent to 6 percent this year, given slowing smartphone demand, inventory adjustments among its customers and macroeconomic uncertainties, TSMC President and Co-Chief Executive Officer Mark Liu (???) said at a meeting with investors. TSMC's revision came after research firm Gartner Inc. forecast July 8 that worldwide semiconductor revenue will reach US$348 billion in 2015, a 2.2 percent increase from 2014, which was a revision from its previous forecast of 4.0 percent growth set in late April. "The outlooks for the major applications that drive the semiconductor market, including PCs, smartphones and tablets, have all been revised downward. This, combined with the impact of the strong dollar on demand in key markets, has resulted in a lower semiconductor forecast for 2015," said Jon Erensen, a research director at Gartner. "The typical second-quarter bounce did not materialize this year, and as a result, the semiconductor industry is more back-end loaded and dependent on a strong third-quarter rebound, driven by Windows 10 and the ramp-up to the holiday season," Erensen wrote in a report.
