Cloud Gate Dance Theatre to hold free outdoor shows

Taipei, July 15 (CNA) Taiwan's renowned Cloud Gate Dance Theatre (????) will give three free outdoor performances of its production "Rice" (??) in Taiwanese cities beginning July 18. The performances will take place July 18 in the main plaza of the National Theater Concert Hall in Taipei; July 25 in the outdoor plaza of the Kaohsiung Cultural Center in southern Taiwan; and Aug. 1 at the Meilun athletics field in eastern Taiwan's Hualien County. All three performances will begin 7:30 p.m. Created to mark Cloud Gate's 40th anniversary, "Rice," which premiered in 2013, presents the life cycle of rice as a metaphor for the ups and downs of a person's life. The shows will be funded by Cathay Financial Holdings, which has provided funding for Cloud Gate to give over 50 free performances in over 20 cities and townships around Taiwan since 1996. The performances have drawn audiences numbering in the hundreds of thousands. The cooperation started 20 years ago when Tsai Hong-tu (???), chairman of Cathay Financial Holdings, made a phone call to Cloud Gate founder and artistic director Lin Hwai-min (???) and expressed interest in cooperating with his dance troupe, Lin said in early July. Established in 1973, Cloud Gate has been called "Asia's leading contemporary dance theatre" by the Times of London. Its production "Moon Water" was selected by the New York Times as the best dance of 2003. (By Christie Chen)
