Annual cycling festival to promote Taiwan's bike tourism: bureau

Taipei, July 15 (CNA) The annual Taiwan Cycling Festival, which is set to roll in October and November, will feature a variety of events aimed at making Taiwan a world-class destination for bike tourism, the Tourism Bureau said Wednesday. Ranging from professional races to family-fun bike tours, the numerous activities can provide participants with an opportunity to learn about the country's cycling environment, the bureau said. The first event of the festival, which runs Oct. 30-Nov. 22, will be the Oct. 30 Taiwan KOM Challenge, which requires cyclists to climb from sea level to 3,275 meters in 105 kilometers to Wuling in central Taiwan, it said. Registration has opened and will run until all 600 slots are taken, half of which will be reserved for cyclists from overseas. Besides this challenge, cyclists can choose a less physically demanding round-the-island ride, with groups from industries, government agencies and grassroots organizations expected to depart from nine Taiwanese cities at the same time to travel around the country in nine days. The massive event, which the organizers said is a representation of the spirit that moves Taiwan forward, will take place Nov. 14-22. During the festival, smaller trips will also be arranged at tourist destinations such as Sun Moon Lake and the East Rift Valley National Scenic Area, which are expected to integrate the sport with tourism to make the country more appealing to foreign visitors, according to bureau officials.
