President Ma meets with Dominican counterpart

Santo Domingo, July 14 (CNA) President Ma Ying-jeou, who is currently on a visit to the Caribbean and Central America, met with his Dominican counterpart Danilo Medina at the National Palace Monday after attending a military ceremony in his honor in the Caribbean country. During the meeting, Ma was bestowed the Duarte, Sanchez and Mella Medal of Merit for his efforts to deepen commercial, political and cultural cooperation between Santo Domingo and Taipei. Ma said that the Dominican Republic is an important diplomatic ally of the Republic of China and the two countries have maintained solid diplomatic ties for more than 70 years. In recognition of Ma's achievements in facilitating regional peace, deepening ties between the two countries, the Dominican Republic passed a resolution to invite Ma several days ago to deliver a speech to the Dominican Congress later Monday. On Monday morning, Ma visited the Integral Disabilities Care Center (CAID), at the invitation of Dominican First Lady Candida Montilla, who helped establish the center. During the visit, Montilla offered details on the work that the institution carries out in favor of children with special needs. Ma arrived Sunday in the Dominican Republic marking the beginning of an eight-day visit to the Caribbean nation and other ROC diplomatic allies Haiti and Nicaragua. (By Kelven Huang and Evelyn Kao)
