Ma highlights cooperative ties in speech to Dominican Congress

Santo Domingo, July 14 (CNA) President Ma Ying-jeou, who is currently on a visit to the Caribbean and Central America, said Monday in an address to Congress of the Dominican Republic that the substantive achievements of Taiwan's viable diplomacy policy are reflected in its deeper cooperative relations with the Caribbean nation. One example of the broader and deeper bilateral cooperation is the establishment of an emergency and security center in the Dominican Republic capital Santo Domingo, which has helped to sharply reduce the crime rate in the city and better protect life and property throughout the country, Ma said. He also mentioned a children's health care center in Santo Domingo, which he had visited earlier in the day. It was established as part of a collaborative plan between the two countries and so far, has provided services to more 20,000 children, Ma said. He said that another four centers will be set up to cater specifically to children with special needs. As part of the cooperative ties, 75 Taiwanese businesses have invested in the Dominican Republic, said Ma, who delivered the speech on his 65th birthday. After addressing the Congress, he visited the emergency and security center, which is equipped with 1,000 motorcycles and 80 ambulances donated by Taiwan. Ma, who is on his 11th overseas visit as president, arrived in Santo Domingo Sunday after a stopover in Boston, United States. His current trip also includes visits to Haiti and Nicaragua, two of Taiwan's other allies in the region. (By Kelven Huang and Evelyn Kao)
