Taiwanese choir wins 2 golds, 1 silver at European Choir Games

Taipei, July 12 (CNA) A choir consisting of over 30 aboriginal students and teachers from Hsinchu County in northern Taiwan has won two gold medals and one silver medal at the European Choir Games in Germany that concluded Sunday.
Hngyang Na Atayal earned gold in category 4 -- Chamber Choirs/Vocal Ensembles -- in the games' Open Competition, which is for amateur choirs from all countries with little or no competition experience.
Their award-winning set of songs comprised "Ave Maria", "Chuan-Ge" and "Bun Wagi."
The Taiwanese choir won another gold in the Open Competition's category 10 -- Folklore -- with three songs that included "Shan Hai Huan Chang."
Due to their outstanding performance in the Open Competition, Hngyang Na Atayal qualified directly for the Grand Prix of Nations, which is designed for top-class choirs from all over the world with international competition experience that have already proven their skills in concerts and international choir competitions.
The Taiwanese choir ended up with a silver medal in the category GP6 -- Folklore -- at the Grand Prix of Nations.
"This has been really a fantastic journey," Hngyang Na Atayal members said while waving the Republic of China national flag at the award ceremony.
The European Choir Games is the continental version of the World Choir Games -- also known as "Choir Olympics." Following the premiere in Graz in 2013, the second edition of this major choral event took place in Magdeburg this year from July 5-12.
The event featured about 100 choirs from 32 countries, including Germany, the United Kingdom, Latvia, Turkey, Brazil, New Zealand, South Africa, China and the United States, in addition to Taiwan, according to the organizer. (By Lu Kang-chun and Jeffrey Wu)
