Young volunteers to teach English in Changhua

Taipei, July 12 (CNA) Nearly 150 volunteer teachers from abroad, along with Changhua County Magistrate Wei Ming-ku, attended a promotional event Sunday, ahead of the opening of four English summer camps to be held in the central county.
Wei expressed hope that local students can improve their English abilities and broaden their international horizons through interacting with the overseas volunteers.
Chen Shih-chih, head of the Department of Overseas Chinese Student Counseling of the Overseas Community Affairs Council, said that more than 3,000 overseas volunteers have visited Taiwan over the past decade and that their number has been increasing year-on-year.
The summer camps include one in 15 elementary schools, which is facilitated by eight students from Truman State University in Missouri and a two-week one in four elementary schools facilitated by 30 ethnic Chinese volunteers from Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States.
Another, moderated by a local non-profit organization, will cover 12,000 students from 30 schools, with some 110 volunteers participating, while the fourth one will be held for students from disadvantaged families in two elementary schools, facilitated by 17 local volunteers.
