BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) -- Two soldiers were killed and three more injured in combat with leftist rebels in southwest Colombia.
The army said on Friday that the soldiers were killed while on patrol in a rural Caqueta province.
The deaths Thursday night followed an announcement this week by peace negotiators for the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia that the group will resume later this month a unilateral cease fire suspended in May in retaliation for a bombing of a guerrilla camp.
The FARC also confirmed they are holding a soldier captured in a separate combat that took place in the volatile Cauca province.
Fighting in Colombia's conflict has intensified since the cease fire was lifted with the government warning it could abandon peace talks taking place in Cuba if a deal isn't struck soon.
