Strengthening Chan-hom to affect northern Taiwan: CWB

Taipei, July 10 (CNA) The Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said Friday that a strengthening Typhoon Chan-hom could bring stronger gusts and more significant rainfall to northern Taiwan in the afternoon as it moves closer to the island.
As of 8 a.m., Chan-hom was centered 400 kilometers east of Taipei, moving at a speed of 20 kilometers per hour in a northwesterly direction.
It was packing maximum sustained winds of 173 kph, with gusts reaching 209 kph, the bureau said. Residents in the northern Taiwan cities of Keelung, Yilan, Taipei, New Taipei and Taoyuan should be prepared for inclement weather, forecasters said.
Torrential rain could be seen islandwide, the bureau said, adding that Taipei, New Taipei, Taoyuan and cities and counties to the south such as Hsinchu, Miaoli, Taichung and Nantou could see rainfall of up to over 300 millimeters in the next 24 hours.
On its current path, Chan-hom's center would pass over waters north of Taiwan late Friday and early Saturday, bureau data showed. (By Lee Hsin-Yin)
