Ma's overseas trip to go ahead despite typhoon: spokesman

Taipei, July 9 (CNA)
President Ma Ying-jeou's upcoming three-nation Latin America tour slated to start Saturday would not be affected by Typhoon Chan-hom although a land warning for the typhoon was issued later Thursday, Presidential Office spokesman Charles Chen said.
Chen said that the government has to strike a balance between dealing with domestic and foreign affairs.
He said that Ma always attaches great importance to disaster prevention and preparedness and has directed the Executive Yuan to be well prepared for the coming typhoon.
The Central Weather Bureau (CWB) issued a land warning for Typhoon Chan-hom in the evening although the storm has veered north from its previous trajectory and moved farther away from Taiwan than expected. President Ma is set to depart on Saturday for an eight-day trip to the ROC's diplomatic allies which would take him to the Dominican Republic on July 12, the Republic of Haiti on July 14, and then the Republic of Nicaragua on July 15. He is scheduled to return to Taiwan on July 18, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. (By Kelven Huang and Evelyn Kao)
