Land warning issued for Typhoon Chan-hom

Taipei, July 9 (CNA)
The Central Weather Bureau (CWB) on Thursday evening issued a land warning for Typhoon Chan-hom, warning the public of strong winds and torrential rain in northern and central parts of the country.
As of 8 p.m., Chan-hom was centered 640 kilometers east of Taipei, moving at a speed of 24 km per hour in a northwesterly direction. It was packing maximum sustained winds of 155 kph, with gusts reaching 191 kph, the bureau said.
On Chan-hom's current path, its center will pass over waters north of Taiwan late Friday, forecasters said.
A strengthening Chan-hom could bring inclement weather to Taiwan, particularly areas north of Taoyuan, the bureau warned.
Rainfall in Taipei, New Taipei, Taoyuan, Hsinchu, Miaoli, Taichung and Nantou could reach 350 mm in the next 24 hours, it said. (By Lee Hsin-Yin)
