College student swept away by rogue wave amid typhoon

Taipei, July 9 (CNA)
A college student was carried away by a rogue wave Thursday in outlying Green Island southeast of Taiwan as Typhoon Chan-hom approaches the country.
The man was with seven companions playing on the shore when a large rogue wave suddenly struck, dragging three of them into the water. Two students managed to find their way back to the shore, sustaining cuts from the rocks, while coast guard officers are currently looking for the missing student.
To avoid accidents during outdoor activities, several recreation areas have decided to cancel operations during the typhoon-affected period.
Taipingshan National Forest Recreation Area in northeastern Taiwan's Yilan County announced Thursday it will remain closed from Thursday afternoon to Friday.
The Yilan International Children's Folklore and Folkgame Festival, which opened last week at the Dongshan River Water Park, will also be closed Friday. (By Lee Hsin-Yin)
