Land warning for Typhoon Chan-hom likely Thursday evening

Taipei, July 9 (CNA)
The Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said Thursday it plans to issue a land warning for a strengthening Typhoon Chan-hom in the evening although the storm has veered north from its previous trajectory and become more distant from Taiwan than expected.
As of 5 p.m., Chan-hom was centered 680 kilometers east of Taipei, moving at a speed of 24 km per hour in a northwesterly direction. It was packing maximum sustained winds of 144 kph, with gusts reaching 180 kph, the bureau said.
Although the typhoon has leaned north from its previous path, it has been picking up strength during the past few hours so its outer rim could still cover areas north of Taoyuan and bring strong gusts and significant rainfall, forecasters said.
The storm will become closest to Taiwan between Friday and Saturday, the bureau said, adding that it could still strengthen on its approach to the country.
On Chan-hom's current path, its eye could pass over waters north of Taiwan on Friday before heading toward China, according to the CWB. (By Lee Hsin-Yin)
