Sea warning issued for Typhoon Chan-hom

Taipei, July 9 (CNA) The Central Weather Bureau issued a sea warning early Thursday for Typhoon Chan-hom, warning of strong gusts in waters north and northeast of Taiwan.
As of 5 a.m., Chan-hom was centered 950 kilometers east-southeast of Taipei, moving at a speed of 25 km per hour in a northwesterly direction. It was packing maximum sustained winds of 137 kph, with gusts reaching 173 kph, the bureau said.
The bureau advised ships operating around Taiwan to heighten their alert, and warned against water activities due to strong winds.
In addition to northern Taiwan, torrential rains are also expected in the southern part of the island and mountainous areas in the central region, forecasters warned.
The bureau said it could issue a land warning later Thursday, warning that Chan-hom could continue picking up strength as it approaches Taiwan.
On Chan-hom's current path, its center could pass over waters north of Taiwan on Friday before heading toward China, posing significant threat to northern parts of the island, it said.
The bureau also lifted the sea warning for Tropical Storm Linfa, which has veered west toward southern China over the past day instead of continuing its earlier approach to Taiwan. (By Lee Hsin-Yin)
