Suspect arrested in city hall arson

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – A man claiming to be dissatisfied with the present situation of society was detained by police Tuesday as a suspect in an arson case at Taipei City Hall.
On Monday at 3:55 a.m., smoke was seen coming out the first floor on the southeast corner of the massive City Hall building. Fire fighters soon put out the blaze but found a broken window nearby, hinting at arson, reports said.
The investigation showed that a man had used a rock to break the window and had entered carrying a 4-liter bucket of a flammable material, which he spread around the room. A cardboard box near the window went up in flames, but the fire was doused by the automatic sprinkler system, reports said.
On Tuesday morning, police visited a 47-year-old man surnamed Lin at his home in Taipei City’s Daan District and found the clothes and shoes worn by the suspect during the arson, the bucket used for the fuel, as well as equipment related to the use of amphetamines, reports said.
Lin reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with the way things were going in society. He was transferred to the Taipei District Prosecutors Office for further questioning.
The suspect’s mother reportedly said he had a history of mental instability and had been seeking treatment.
He will likely be charged with destroying public property and with drugs use.
Taipei City Mayor Ko Wen-je praised the police for their rapid solving of the issue, but also called on the public to show more concern for other people. At present, the counseling structure for people with mental problems had not been sufficiently built up, he added.
