Court nullifies town chief's election

Taipei, July 6 (CNA) The Pingtung District Court on Monday invalidated the election of Chen Lung-chin (???) as the head of Liouciou Township after finding him guilty of vote buying. The township chief was one of three politicians in the township charged with buying votes to get elected, but the only one whose verdict was announced Monday. Chen, township council member Hung Tzu-chien (???) and a township council candidate were all indicted for jointly buying votes at a price of NT$4,000 per vote ahead of local government elections in late November 2014. Chen said he will appeal his verdict. Hung, who ran for office for the first time last year, gained prominence while acting as the spokesperson for her family after her father, fisherman Hung Shih-cheng, was killed when Philippine Coast Guard personnel strafed Hung's fishing vessel in May 2013. She was recognized for standing up for the rights of Taiwan's fishermen in the face of the unwarranted shooting. Hung's verdict is expected to be announced on July 8. (By S.C. Chang)
