President to hold national security meeting on water park fire

Taipei, July 6 (CNA) President Ma Ying-jeou will hold a national security meeting Monday to hear a briefing by the relevant agencies on the care of victims of a recent flash fire at a New Taipei water park, officials said. The June 27 explosion killed two people and left nearly 500 people injured. According to statistics from the Ministry of Health and Welfare (MOHW), as of noon July 5, some 282 victims of the fire were in intensive care at 48 hospitals. Among them, 237 were listed as in critical condition, the ministry said. Ma recently visited Cathay General Hospital, Taipei Medical University Shuang Ho Hospital and Far Eastern Memorial Hospital, accompanied by MOHW officials, to meet with relatives of the victims and listen to their opinions and needs, the officials said. Based on a directive from the president, the MOHW has promised the families that the government will help deal with issues relating to medical care and costs, study, and employment of those injured. At Monday's meeting, Ma is expected to raise the opinions of the families for discussion, the officials said. (By Y.F. Low)
