President requesting public's help in aiding water park blast victims

Taipei, July 4 (CNA) President Ma Ying-jeou (???) on Saturday called for more assistance from the public to help the people injured in a dust explosion at a water park in New Taipei, pledging that the government will do its utmost to ensure the injured receive proper medical care. "Let's pray for the injured and hope that they will recover soon and have the courage to live on," Ma said in his address at a military display to mark the 70th anniversary of the Republic of China's victory in the War of Resistance against Japan, which took place at an Army base in Hukou, Hsinchu County. Meanwhile, he pledged that the government will make all-out efforts to care for the injured to provide them the best possible medical treatment. He also urged the public to extend a helping hand and donate money to help the injured, who face a long road to recovery. Of the 495 people injured by the searing flames shooting out from a colored powder explosion at a Color Play Asia party held at the Formosa Fun Coast Water Park (????) in New Taipei, two have died and 230 are in critical condition, according to figures released by Taiwan's Ministry of Health and Welfare on Saturday. A total of 276 victims are being treated in intensive care units, the ministry said. The accident occurred June 27, when colored cornstarch powder being sprayed from the stage into the audience of revelers suddenly erupted into a devastating inferno at the water park party in New Taipei's Bali District. Since the accident, government agencies and private groups have provided bank accounts to receive donations from the the public to help the victims. (By Elaine Hou and Lung Pei-ning)
