Afternoon thunderstorms forecast for Saturday

Taipei, July 3 (CNA) Parts of northern Taiwan can expect rain and Yilan County and low-lying areas in western Taiwan will get afternoon thunderstorms on Saturday as a Pacific high pressure system weakens and a weather front moves in, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said Friday. The highs for western Taiwan will likely reach 34 to 35 degrees Celsius while those for eastern Taiwan will be around 32 to 34 degrees, the bureau said. The bureau warned that most parts of Taiwan will also experience excessively high levels of ultraviolet radiation on Saturday. As of 2 p.m. Friday, Tropical Storm Linfa was centered 940 kilometers southeast of Taiwan's southernmost tip of Eluanbi, moving west-northwest at a speed of 12km per hour toward northern Luzon, according to the CWB. It was packing maximum sustained winds of 83 kph, with gusts of up to 108 kph, the bureau said. The chances of rain in eastern and southern Taiwan will increase starting Sunday as the storm moves closer, it said. There is also a possibility that Linfa will interact with another storm, Tropical Storm Chan-hom, which is some 2,000km east of Linfa in the Pacific but continues to strengthen, the bureau said.
