Hohaiyan Rock Festival canceled

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The New Taipei City Government on Friday announced the cancellation of the Hohaiyan Rock Festival for the first time in its 16-year history.
The cancellation was a consequence of the deaths of two people and the burns suffered by almost 500 mostly young people at the Formosa Fun Coast water park on June 27.
While the water park is situated in New Taipei City’s Bali District, the Hohaiyan Rock Festival takes place on Fulong Beach in Gongliao, another district further east along the coast. The 16th edition of the music event was scheduled to take place July 24-26. A competition part of the festival involving ten bands would not be canceled but rescheduled because of the efforts already made, the New Taipei City Government’s tourism department said.
The city said that with so many young people still lying gravely injured in hospital, it would not be suitable nor popular to stage a large rock festival on the coast so soon after.
According to Ministry of Health and Welfare data published Friday, a total of 211 patients were in critical condition, up from 184 the previous day.
The investigation into what caused the ignition of colored cornstarch powder at the water park is still continuing. The DJ working at the event was questioned by prosecutors Friday, and told reporters that nobody had been smoking on stage while she was working.
