Vietnamese spouse teaches Mandarin to new immigrants

A Vietnamese new immigrant surnamed Nguyen moved to Taiwan 14 years ago, but after her husband passed away, she had to raise her children and support her family alone. She later founded the New Immigrant Culture Improvement Association, and she hopes to help more immigrants who suffered from the same problem.

She came to Taiwan for work before meeting her husband. They had their first son after four years of marriage, but unfortunately, her husband passed away the same year. She started learning Chinese, working, and taking care of her kid all at the same time, and she is now a certified Chinese teacher. She funded the New Immigrant Culture Improvement Association two years ago, and the number of members has reached 200 now. The association holds regular activities for new immigrants, helping them adapting to the new life here.

She is now a Vietnamese and Chinese teacher, and also got her Taiwanese ID. She said that she has been waiting for the Taiwanese ID for over ten years, and many Taiwanese people used to call her ”migrant worker” which really hurts her feeling, and now she could respond with confidence: “Even if we are migrant workers, we have the same human rights!”
