Tropical storm likely to affect Taiwan from Sunday: CWB

Taipei, July 3 (CNA) A tropical storm that formed off the Philippines Thursday may start bringing rains to Taiwan on the weekend, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said Friday, adding that it is likely to issue a sea warning in the coming days. As of 8 a.m. Friday, Tropical Storm Linfa was centered 980 kilometers southeast of Taiwan's southernmost tip, moving at a speed of 12 kilometers per hour in a west-northwesterly direction, CWB forecasters said. It was packing maximum sustained winds of 65 kph, with gusts of up to 90 kph, they said. The chances of rain in eastern and southern parts of the country will increase from Sunday as Linfa moves closer, CWB forecasters said. There is also a possibility that Linfa will interact with another storm, Typhoon Chan-hom, which is some 2,000 km away from Linfa but continues to strengthen, forecasters said. That situation, however, will not become clear until Monday, forecasters said. At 8 a.m., Chan-hom was centered 3,110 kilometers east-southeast of Taiwan's southernmost tip, moving at a speed of 7 km per hour in a north-northwesterly direction. It was packing maximum sustained winds of 119 kph, with gusts of up to 155 kph, the bureau said. (By Lee Hsin-Yin)
